Recently I’ve heard a lot about burnout and ministry fatigue. For some reason this reminded me of the analogy of a glass half full or half empty. I tend toward a positive outlook on most things, so I always think I see the glass as half full. But I’ve realized there is another way to view the glass.
Our lives can be at the halfway point and be either on the way up or on the way down. Both can be positive. Our lives are half full when God is filling us up. We are half empty when we have been pouring out into others. There are times for filling and times for pouring out.
If your glass is half empty and decreasing, you may have been pouring out more than filling up. It may be time to get away and let God begin to fill you again. Burnout or ministry fatigue occurs at this point. The only answer for burnout is to spend more time with God for filling than we do pouring.
Another side of this equation is when we become too full to receive more. If you don’t feel like you are receiving more from God, then it is probably time to pour into others.
