Overcoming the Odds

What are are “the odds”? According to it is the probability that something is so, will occur, or is more likely to occur than something else. It’s the ratio of probability.

There are two records in I Samuel where Saul took 3,000 men to seek out David and kill him. David had about 400 men with him. What are the odds? The probability was 7.5 to 1 that Saul would be successful. But he wasn’t. In Judges 7 Gideon took 300 men to fight against the enemy. It says that the enemy lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. You figure those odds. Another reference notes up to 135,000 men. Those odds would be 1,167 to 1 that Gideon would not defeat the enemy. But he did.

The odds of winning the lottery are listed at about 176 million to 1. Millions of people play the lottery every week. Sometimes someone wins, so millions take those odds.

We take chances every day against the odds of defeat in the physical realm when we stand to possibly gain something, no matter how slim that possibility. Why not in the spiritual? Ephesians says we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

So what is your current struggle? What are the odds of overcoming? This struggle or battle doesn’t have to be yours alone. The battle is the Lord’s.

Challenge: Roll the dice on God. Let him fight your battle and overcome the odds. I say the odds of victory with God on our side far outweigh our odds of victory in our own strength. What do you say?
